Partnering With God
A childhood friend wrote this about her parents and I can attest to its validity as I knew this couple my entire life. They had a marriage of “opposites attract”, which often connects a couple, but can also be the thing that drives you crazy! I saw firsthand the way God was the glue that held them together, through thick and thin.
“One is deaf and struggling to connect things in the way he used to, one is facing days numbered by cancer. They have travelled 59+ years together, such complete opposites held together by a devotion gritty and strong, and held by their God through everything. I watch them say goodbye this morning as he heads out to church. She has managed to make it to the window to wave goodbye and he heads out after giving her one of those big sloppy kisses … she is always “his beautiful wife” whatever her condition. She is entrusting him to their God who has whispered that He will take care of “her Ralph” once she is gone. The years have flown and time marches on … and this is what love really looks like.”
A real tear-jerker, it reminds me that some of my best work as a Christian will be partnering with God to build love, romantic or otherwise, that is centered on Him, able to withstand the ups and downs life brings. I don’t know about you but I need these examples of older Christians living out the commitments of “for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health ….. till death do us part”.
